What is the Bhartiya Kisan Union?

The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) is an Indian farmer's representative organization that was founded in 1987 by Chaudhary Charan Singh, who was also known as the "second messiah" of the farmers after Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. The BKU is based in Sisauli village in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, where it has its national headquarters.

The BKU is affiliated to the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) and Via Campesina, which are international networks of farmers' movements. The BKU has branches in several states of India, such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, etc. The BKU has millions of members across India who belong to different castes, religions and regions.

The BKU aims to protect and promote the interests of the farmers in India by raising their voice against exploitation, oppression and injustice. The BKU also strives to improve the living conditions of the farmers by providing them with various benefits and services such as legal aid, insurance, education, health care, etc. The BKU also works for social change by challenging casteism, communalism and patriarchy.

What are the Achievements of the Bhartiya Kisan Union?

The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has been involved in many agitations and protests over the years to demand better prices for crops, waiving of electricity bills and loans, higher compensation for land acquisition, implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations, repeal of farm laws 2020, etc. Some of the notable achievements of the BKU are:

  • In 1988, the BKU organized a massive rally at Delhi's Boat Club lawns with nearly five lakh farmers from western Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India. The rally lasted for over a week and compelled the Rajiv Gandhi government to accept its 35-point charter of demands including raising of prices for sugarcane and waiving of electricity bills for farmers.

  • In 1990, the BKU organized another huge rally in Lucknow with over two lakh farmers who demanded higher sugarcane prices and heavy rebates in electricity dues from the Janata Dal government of Uttar Pradesh. The rally was successful in getting its demands met.

  • In 1992, the BKU staged a dharna in Lucknow with its demand for writing off farmers' loans up to Rs 10,000. The BKU also arranged another dharna in Ghaziabad demanding higher compensation for land acquisition from farmers.

  • In 2007-08, the BKU joined hands with other farmers' organizations under the banner of AIKSCC to launch a nationwide campaign for implementing Swaminathan Commission recommendations on minimum support price (MSP), crop insurance and debt relief for farmers.

  • In 2018-19, the BKU participated in several protests against the farm laws 2020 that were passed by the Modi government without consulting or taking consent from the farmers. The BKU along with other farmers' groups blocked several highways and borders around Delhi demanding repeal of these laws that they considered anti-farmer and pro-corporate.

What are the Future Plans of the Bhartiya Kisan Union?

The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has been fighting for the rights and interests of the farmers for over three decades. However, it is not satisfied with its achievements and has many future plans to further its cause. Some of the future plans of the BKU are:

The BKU along with other farmers' groups has been protesting at various borders around Delhi since November 2020 demanding repeal of these laws that they consider anti-farmer and pro-corporate.

  • To expand its membership and reach across India by forming more branches and units in different states and regions. The BKU also plans to recruit more women, youth and marginalized farmers into its fold.

  • To strengthen its alliance and coordination with other farmers' organizations in India and abroad under the banner of AIKSCC and Via Campesina. The BKU also plans to participate in international forums and events related to farmers' issues.

  • To launch more campaigns and movements on various issues affecting the farmers such as MSP, crop insurance, debt relief, land rights, water rights, climate change, etc.

  • To improve the living conditions of the farmers by providing them with more benefits and services such as legal aid, insurance, education, health care, etc. The BKU also plans to set up more cooperatives, banks, markets and industries for the farmers.
