Premium buyers can also upgrade the appearance of their car with several AMG styling upgrades, including the AMG Line with Night Package that adds gloss black exterior accents, AMG body styling, 18-inch AMG 5-spoke alloy wheels, AMG sport seats, a performance steering wheel, plus a sport-tuned suspension, brakes, and steering.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the new fifth iteration of the brand's namesake model. With a complete ground-up redesign, the W206 C-Class's late arrival in spring due to global shortages left many wondering if the replacement would make this year at all. Thankfully, Mercedes-Benz is leaving many of the manufacturing woes in the past as inventory begins to fill dealer lots. The fifth-generation C-Class is an elegant luxury car that arrives in sedan flavor only; convertible and coupe variants will follow in 2023. With the finest interior in the segment and a stately exterior, the all-new C-Class is stiff competition against the Audi A3 and BMW 3-Series, both of which are quickly becoming dated. With an extensive array of unique colors and options and a standard mild-hybrid system, the all-new C-Class is sure to attract many first-time Mercedes-Benz buyers, even at its decidedly premium price tag.
At launch, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-class arrives solely in the C 300 guise with a singular powertrain. The engine is a turbo 2.0-Liter I-4 which couples to a mild-hybrid system to produce 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The 48V mild-hybrid system can also provide an additional 20 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque for short jaunts when pulling away from lights. Power then finds its way through a smooth nine-speed automatic transmission before sending energy to the rear or all four wheels. The standard hybrid system means this is the most efficient C-Class to ever hit the market, with an EPA rating of 25 mpg city and 35 mpg on the highway. The C 43 AMG variant arrives next year for those looking for more performance.
Despite going light on the number of cylinders, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-class still retains the excellent driving dynamics of its predecessors, along with exciting performance thanks to the electric motor's instant torque that nestles in between the engine and transmission. The new C 300 reaches 60 mph in a brief 5.3-seconds. Acceleration feels EV-like as the 9-speed automatic never struggles to figure out which gear it should be in; shifts are smooth with little to no feeling entering the cabin. The C 300 is an excellent highway cruiser with suspension that emphasizes comfort. Any vibration from the road disappears within the superb front and rear multi-link suspension.
Available dual-pane acoustic glass further removes the cabin from the outside world. The AMG-line package features a stiffer suspension that aids in taking on corners, but in turn, the ride becomes less forgiving. The new c-class handles all steering input with poise. It confidently goes where you point it without drama. The 4Matic AWD enhances highway confidence in poor weather conditions but doesn't do much for off-the-line performance. This option should only be necessary for those living in climates with snowy winters.
While the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-class's exterior is imposing, the interior is home to its greatest design achievement. Mercedes-Benz lifts several elements directly from the S-class, resulting in a sedan with the finest interior in the segment. As the driver steps in, they will immediately notice the door's weight and the door panel's complexity. The 15-speaker Burmester audio system features aluminum grilles that pair well with the piano finish accents. Seat controls on the door are aluminum with touch capacitive buttons for heating and ventilation. Power seats with four-way lumbar are standard in the C-class. The lower thigh support extends to cradle the legs of taller drivers. The three-spoke steering wheel features a vast array of buttons for the semi-autonomous cruise control, a slider for volume, and two multifunction touch pads that control the driver's display and infotainment.
The 12.3" driver's display stands freely in front of the driver and is highly configurable with excellent graphics. Just beyond is an optional head-up display with the best graphics in the field. It can even project images of the navigation map from the infotainment. Behind the rearview mirror is a built-in toll pass programmable to any major U.S. provider. In the center, the massive 11.9" infotainment display runs on the latest iteration of the MBUX software and functions similarly to the unit buyers find in the S-class. The system features excellent graphics and wireless integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. At the base of the screen is a fingerprint scanner which drivers can use in place of a key. A panel in the center console hides two cup-holders and a wireless phone charger. The center storage opens with split-folding doors and closes with a quality-sounding click. A panoramic sunroof allows light to flood both the front and rear seats.
The back seat of the C 300 is fairly conventional, with a soft center armrest that contains two cup-holders. Two rear air conditioner vents are the extent of amenities but on par for the sport sedan class. A power opening and closing trunk are standard. The 40/20/40 folding rear seat increases the practicality of the 12.6 cu-ft cargo area. Other practical features for buyers include nine airbags and a standard safety suite that includes lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, emergency braking, and driver alert monitoring.
Pricing for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is decidedly premium but still in line with its class. The base "Premium" trim begins at $43,550 and includes a host of standard equipment such as a sunroof, front seat heating, blind-spot monitors, twin digital displays, hands-free access, and full LED lighting. The mid-level "Exclusive" trim is $45,800 and adds configurable ambient lighting, a Burmester sound system, 5G streaming through the infotainment, wireless charging, 360-degree camera, and autonomous parking. The Pinnacle trim is the finest in the series starting at $47,500, and adds finer interior trims, a head-up display, and augmented reality navigation. Options beyond the trims are minimal, with $450 for front-seat ventilation, $1,000 for a panoramic sunroof, and $1,700 for the driver's assistance package. Overall the fifth-generation C-class is an excellent car with standard features that are extra costs in its competitors. With captivating design and technology, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-300 will surely be another successful product for the brand.
